If you read this site regularly, and you probably don’t because not too many people do, in fact I am extremely surprised that you are reading this now. If you are then thank you, your readership is very much appreciated.
Anyway, if you read this site regularly will probably notice that I love songs that have good grooves that make you want to tap your foot, bang your head and/or start moving your whole body violently in time with the music.
In the case of Henry’s Funeral Shoe, their self titled song brought about the latter reaction in me.
Nothing I can write can express the feeling I got at the end of the chorus, when he sings “Don’t let your heart get heavy Henry!” and then it blasts back into the verse. The best way I can describe it is something like the effect of drinking a watered down Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, which feels like “having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick”.
I don’t know how they manage to get so much power from just two instruments, but I don’t really care, as long as they keep the gold bricks coming and the lemon basket topped up.
If you watch the videos on their MySpace page, you will start to realise where this mighty power comes from. For starters, Brennig Clifford looks like he was taught to play drums by Animal from the Muppets, and I mean that as a compliment. From watching the video you can see how much energy and passion he puts into his performance.
And you don’t even need to watch the video hear that same passion in Aled Clifford’s voice. When you only have two instruments, the vocal performance is especially important. Aled’s vocals put a lot of energy into the mix, and are an integral feature of the bands sound.
It is clear for all to see and hear that these guys love writing and playing music. It is also clear for all to see and hear that they know how to write and play music. The combination of the two, of course, leads to a highly entertaining conclusion.

you’ve been read, believe me ! and i totally agree: WHAT A BAND !
