Death of an Icon - Ho Monkey
Monday 19 October 09 • Categorized as Random Track Reviews
Death of an Icon are a heavy hard rock grungy metal band from Cardiff and they are terrific. The track in question, ‘Ho Monkey’, is a phenomenal tune with a really cool groove that does something to your nervous system which makes random parts of your body twitch along involuntarily to the song.
An unyielding drum beat pounds along, underpinning the fantastic hard rock guitar riffs which, along with the vocals, give the song a brutal edge. The bass provides a satisfying low end rumble which completes the song leaving the listener to be enthralled and left spellbound buy the bands spectacle. The song isn’t too fast but it is filled with relentless power and packs a fierce punch.
The singing is hard to describe in that it is perfectly imperfect. What I mean is that while it is are not what most people would describe as perfect singing it is perfect because it fits so perfectly with the music, kind of like Axl Rose on Appetite for Destruction.
I was very happy when I first heard them, as I always am when I find a band that can play heavy music while having a proper singer and not some muppet screaming at the top of his lungs and generally making a fool of himself.
I am sorry if you happen to be one of those screamo/emo people who enjoy listening to the same power chord over and over accompanied by the sound of some idiot trying to chop his own limbs off with a chainsaw without any regard for melody or rhythm, but it’s not my cup of tea.
And to anyone likes that sort of thing please try to keep in mind that loudness is good companion to, not a substitute for, musical talent.
I’ve gone completely of the point, but I have left it in because I feel that those things needed to be said.
Anyway, to get back to the topic at hand, Death of an Icon are a great band who create a pretty formidable sound, and, as with all the bands and artists I review here I would definitely recommend them and suggest that you seriously consider checking them out, after all it only takes one click.
