Clay Statues @ Ten Feet Tall
I had been looking forward to seeing Clay Statues and getting the chance to review them properly, because the last time I tried, at Clwb Y Bont, Dozz managed to blow up the bass amp half way through the set, which is why I have pictures of them but no review from that gig.
Clay Statues are a rather unusual band consisting of just bass and drums. When I first heard about the idea I will admit that, despite my immense respect for the musical talents of both Mavis and Dozz, I honestly didn’t think it would work. But, as is the case on many occasions, I was wrong.
Through an ingenious blend of quirky drum beats, infectious bass lines, clever lyrics, distortion, bass chords, gaffa tape and throwing things around they have created a truly colossal sound. Seeing them live is like being head-butted by a woolly mammoth.
Dozz is a fiery and energetic frontman, he sings and plays with a burning passion which combines perfectly with the gigantic sound that comes out of his amp.
Mavis is one part cool laid back drummer, two part mad frantic drum thumping animal, and seems to play in absolute harmony with the ultimate drummer philosophy “I just hit things”, but he hits them well.
My favourite song of the set had to be their extended version of Cake, which clocked it at a staggeringly long 0.62 seconds and I would highly recommend going to see them live at any opportunity you get, and if you can’t afford a ticket, then sell one of your kidneys, I guarantee it will be worth it.
