Jets To Zurich @ Ten Feet Tall
When I turned up at 10 feet tall the place was empty and (apart from a few random people, including a couple of OAPs and two guys who were obviously looking for a strip club) that didn’t really change for the entire night. However, I think that is fair enough for a mid recession Monday night.
After I got there it turned out that due to complaints for the restaurant next door the gig couldn’t start until 10:30, which was a problem for me as my last train was at 10:45, and because I didn’t want to pay £40 for a taxi home I would have to leave before the gig started and that would make writing this review kind of difficult.
Fortunately, the guys from Jets to Zurich were kind enough to give me a lift home in a car that sounded like it was going to explode, luckily for me it didn’t and I am still here to write this review.
Unfortunately, even though I had gone to review the gig, through a set of circumstances beyond my control, I found myself on the door during the Jet’s set, so I couldn’t actually see them playing (from this point on we will just assume that their stage presence was awesome) but I could hear them and that will have to do.
The Jets to Zurich, which consists of Dale Hawkins on guitar and vocals, Shea Jones on drums and Simon Hawkins on bass, produce a cool grungy rock sort of sound, which was perfectly demonstrated by the first song they played, which was either called Bus Killer or Buzz Killer, I can’t quite remember which but I think it was buzz killer because it sounds better, although I think that someone should write a song called bus killer because it would be funny. Bus/Buzz Killer served as a perfect opening number to a great gig and I’m sure it would have gotten the crowd going if more than 18 people had actually turned up to the gig, but as I said earlier it was a Monday night, and there is a recession, oh and they were also competing against the x-factor in the CIA.
The two other songs that really stood out for me were Murmur and This Town Ain’t Vegas. Murmur which was a bit slower and had a really cool wahry guitar part which I liked, and This Town Ain’t Vegas which sound kind of punky to me are both great songs and I’m not sure why they didn’t make it on the EP. A song that did find it’s why on to the EP however is Overdriver, an awesome song with a great beat and heavy, distorted sound that is sure to satisfy any headbangers that turn up.
The Jets to Zurich are a band with a great raw energy, and as this was their second gig they can be forgiven for being a bit rough around the edges, but after a few more gigs they will be able to tighten up the screws and channel and focus all their raw energy to create a truly awesome sound and play some wicked gigs.
